The Dangers of Nail Salons

Posted by admin in General

Nail salons are supposed to a place where women (and some men now) can go to relax. However, there are some things that you need to keep an eye out for so that you don’t jeopardize your safety or your health. It all started when I first went to a nail salon with my mother years ago. When many of my other friends had already had their first manicure practically out of the womb, my mother wouldn’t let me until I was older. We went to the nail salon, and when the nail tech asked me what I would be interested in having done, I shyly told her that all I wanted was a manicure. If you’ve never had your nails done before, the nail technician will usually ask you what type of manicure you would like. Manicures can range from simple manicures to french manicures and more. Next, you’ll be asked to pick out a color for your manicure by looking at the wide selection of nail polishes that they have. As an additional note, you should know that how a particular color of nail polish looks in a bottle is quite different from what you will actually get once it is applied on your nails.

When you sit down, the nail technician will examine your nails and ask you if you want them “round” or “square” shaped. Depending on what your hands look like, rounded nails may look better or worse than square nail shapes. The nail technician will then go through each finger individually, cleaning out any unwanted debris from under the nail and then using nail clippers and/or a buffer type implement to shape them as you wanted. After this, an oil mixture will be lightly applied to each of your nail cuticles. For some nail technicians, what comes next often varies. The oil mixture that has just been applied is in order to soften up your cuticles so that they can be pushed back and/or then cut. The point of doing this is to elongate the nail bed, making your nails more elegant looking. However, newbies should watch out.

Anytime that I’ve had my cuticles cut, things are usually fine and dandy for the first day or two and then I usually start to see my cuticles begin to peel. In the past, my cuticles have been so irritated after having them cut, that I’ve actually had to put my hands in ice or apply an ointment to help get rid of the irritation. As a result, whenever I visit a nail salon now, I tell the nail technician “no cuticle cut” after they apply the ointment to my nail bed in case they don’t ask me. In most cases, the nail technician will ask you what you want to do before he or she does anything though.

Another thing to be aware of when you get your nails done is the cleanliness of the actual establishment. Most importantly, is the nail technician using nail tools on you that have been properly cleansed? In some nail salons, you’ll actually see the nail technicians open up brand new packages of tools to use on your hands; but in most nail salons, the nail technician will (or should) pull nail supplies from cleanser jars which contain a sterile solution inside that is used to purify the nail supplies and materials.
